A Place to Celebrate January 21st and before

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Rett,
Happy Birthday to you.

On January 21st, 1955 (do the math), Loretta Robinson was the third daughter born to Leonard and Lura Robinson.

Before Lura’s death, Loretta had a lovely tradition of presenting flowers (often a rose or roses) to her mother on January 21st in tribute to that momentous day.  It was fitting, for Rett not only was looking back in honor of her mother, but she was looking forward to her special new year ahead.

January is named after the Roman god Janus, who presided over doors and beginnings – appropriately enough, for the beginning of the year.  Janus’ image is usually depicted with two faces: one looking backwards and one looking forwards, as is often characteristic of a new year.

Celebrations of birthdays, whether in January or in other months, provide us an opportunity to look back and to look forward.  Have you ever considered the moment of your own conception? I suppose most of us hope that it was a moment of joy and ecstasy for our parents, just as we hope that after the hardship of childbirth, there is a period of jubilation.  No wonder birthdays are to be celebrated!

All of us who know Rett recognize that births and birthday celebrations at Merry Mount are most often led by her.  Her maternal instinct is strong and she is principally involved.  Whether as midwife to animals born here, or as the undisputed baker of birthday cakes or pies, Rett spreads her love around.  We celebrate her today through the photos below.

As we celebrate Rett’s birthday today, let us join her on this 21st day of January in looking back with gratitude for what we have, as well as, looking forward with great expectations for the year ahead.

Happy Birthday Rett!

P.S.  Rett says, "Happy Birthday Pete!"
