A Place for MOTHERS on Mother’s Day 2018

Today, May 13, 2018, I have updated a blogpost that I wrote for Mother’s Day 2017. New photos have been added.  Enjoy.

Whether the following mothers are physically located today at Merry Mount or whether they are somewhere afar, we honor them.  Their DNA and their individual quirks and sayings pour forth from us on a daily basis.

My dear mother, Dorsey Lou Woliver, gave birth to me on October 6, 1952.  From that day till this, I have been surrounded by her love. I am blessed by wonderful memories too numerous to write here, but I can see in my mind’s eye her sledding down the hill with us in winter on Highland View; her hanging towels on the clothes line on a warm breezy Spring morning; her batting stance in preparation to receive a curve ball during an afternoon whiffle ball game in summer; or her helping us carve the pumpkin before Halloween in Autumn.  But perhaps, the two strongest memories are 1) seeing her prepare a big skillet of “Alabama Scramble” or tomato gravy; and 2) hearing her voice shouting, “he knocked a home run” as she celebrates one of her favorite Atlanta Braves.

Rett’s mother, Lura Mae Robinson (July 18, 1926-April 6, 2007), was a hard-working woman who loved her family.  She warmly accepted me into it and I have fond memories of her and her Southern sayings.  Here is a sampling: “Make yourself useful as well as ornamental”;  “two head’s are better than one, even if one is a sheep’s head”; and when referring to house chores, “I’ll give it a lick and a promise”  We miss you Lura!

Every day, I give thanks for my wife and partner Loretta Robinson Woliver. She is the mother of our two children; Simon (born on New Year’s Day) and Caroline (born on Thanksgiving).  For thirty plus years, Rett’s #1 priority has been her children.  Whether at noon preparing lunch, or during the wee hours of the night, she has dedicated herself to their well-being.  I love her for it.  Thanks Rett!

The newest mother of Merry Mount is Kristine Missall Woliver. Kris brings the same adventuresome spirit to mothering her twin daughters that she brings to all aspects of her life.  We watched with amazement as she handled a high-risk pregnancy with aplomb, and she seems undaunted by the challenge of being mother to identical twins.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day 2018, I salute the strong women who I consider the Mothers of Merry Mount.
