The Full Moon for August is called Sturgeon Moon because of the large number of fish in the lakes where the Algonquin tribes fished; but other names for this Full Moon include Green Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Fruit Moon, and Grain Moon from Old English/Anglo-Saxon.
This contrary blogger offers yet another name. When the full moon rises over Junk Road on August 3rd, I will name it the “Coon Moon”. My surrounding neighbors and I have seen evidence of these nocturnal bandits, and I’m here to say that these smart rascals know exactly when the sweet corn is perfect for harvesting and underneath a full moon they can destroy a corn patch in one night.
There once was a pair of coons,
Whose taste for corn made them swoon.
With an eye on the patch,
They knew to dispatch,
By the light of the August full moon.
Believe me, I'm not the Raccoon Whisperer:

Be well! Eat more corn.
